First Aid in the Workplace


Level 2 Emergency First Aid in the Workplace:

This (6 contact hours) course, with continuous assessment by the trainer, meets the requirements for an Emergency First Aider as specified in the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and certificate issued is valid for three years.

This course is primarily aimed at smaller workplaces that present potentially fewer health and safety risks, where a nominated individual is required to take charge in the event of illness or accident or that nominated person might assist the First Aider. The fully qualified First Aiders in larger organisations can also benefit from additional support from these other First Aiders. This is especially relevant where the workplace may consist of many floors, cover a large site or where work is operated in shift patterns.

Level 3 First Aid at Work:

This three day (18 contact hours) course combines theory with hands-on practical and role-play exercises. All individuals who are successful in passing this course will receive an industry recognised, HSE recognised First Aid at Work Certificate, valid for 3 years. At the end of the course candidates will be competent in the following:

  • Managing an incident
  • Dealing with accidents and illness
  • Basic life support (CPR – adults and paediatric)
  • Regulations
  • Aims and objectives of first aid
  • First aid priorities
  • Prioritising casualties
  • Using a First Aid kit
  • Simple record keeping
  • Resuscitation
  • Treatment of an unconscious casualty
  • Examining a casualty
  • Choking
  • Treatment of a heart attack
  • Control of bleeding
  • Burns and scalds Poisoning
  • Fractures
  • Shock

Who should attend?
Any person who has been designated by their employer as a first aider at work. All employers in the UK have a legal obligation under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 to make First Aid provision for their employees.

The knowledge and confidence to deal with many First Aid emergencies

Before expiry of this certificate, students must undertake a two-day HSE Approved Refresher course, which will then re-authorise their certification for a further three years. Students are strongly recommended by the HSE to undertake a short 3 hour refresher course at the 12 and 24 month point

Students of the Three Day First Aid at Work and the Two-Day Refresher course will receive a high quality and appropriate First Aid Manual.
